SunsetMail Privacy Policy
Effective date: October 11, 2026
SunsetMail ("SunsetMail", "we", "us") is a Chrome extension that creates Gmail filters from the email you are viewing and moves emails to Trash when their lifespan has passed. It is operated by LinetWorks.
This policy explains what data SunsetMail accesses, how it is used, where it is stored, and how you can delete it.
Summary
- SunsetMail has no servers of its own. It runs entirely inside your Chrome browser.
- Your Gmail data is exchanged only between your browser and Google's Gmail API. It is never sent to us or to any other third party.
- SunsetMail does not store the content of your emails.
- We do not sell your data, use it for advertising, or use it to train AI models.
Google user data that SunsetMail accesses
SunsetMail asks for the following Google permissions (OAuth scopes):
| Permission | What SunsetMail does with it |
|---|---|
https://www.googleapis.com/auth/gmail.settings.basic |
Create, list, and delete Gmail filters, and change filters you edit in SunsetMail. |
https://www.googleapis.com/auth/gmail.modify |
Read the sender, recipient, and subject of the email you open SunsetMail on; count and find emails that match a rule; create SunsetMail labels and add them to emails; move emails whose lifespan has passed to Trash. |
SunsetMail never permanently deletes emails. Emails are only moved to Trash, where Gmail keeps them for 30 days. SunsetMail does not request the full-access scope (https://mail.google.com/).
Specifically, SunsetMail accesses:
- Email metadata: the From, To, and Subject headers of the email you open SunsetMail on, and the IDs and received dates of emails that match your rules. SunsetMail does not read the body or attachments of your emails.
- Gmail filters and labels: your existing filters, so they can be listed, named, searched, and edited, and your labels, so SunsetMail's own labels (such as
SunsetMail/7d) can be created and found. - Your email address: to sign in to the correct Gmail account and to keep rules for different accounts apart. SunsetMail reads it from the title of the open Gmail tab and confirms it with Google.
How SunsetMail uses Google user data
Google user data is used only to provide the features you use in SunsetMail:
- to fill in the rule form from the email you are viewing;
- to show how many existing emails a rule matches before you create it;
- to create, list, edit, and delete your Gmail filters;
- to apply a rule's label to existing emails, if you choose to;
- to move emails whose lifespan has passed to Trash, and to show how many emails each rule has cleaned up.
Data is fetched when it is needed for one of these features, used, and then discarded.
Data stored on your device
SunsetMail stores the following in Chrome's extension storage:
| Data | Where | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Rule names you choose (the form may prefill a name from the sender's display name), the Gmail filter ID, the account the rule belongs to, the rule's lifespan, the date it was created, and a short one-way hash of the filter criteria | chrome.storage.sync |
To show names next to your filters and to find a rule again if Gmail changes its filter ID |
| For each rule: the number of emails moved to Trash and when the last one was moved | chrome.storage.sync |
To show cleanup statistics |
| The email addresses of accounts that have signed in to SunsetMail, and the account selected on the options page | chrome.storage.local |
To clean up each signed-in account and remember your choice |
| Cleanup settings, whether you have seen the first-run hint in Gmail, and the results of the last 20 cleanups (date, account, lifespan, number of emails) | chrome.storage.local |
To apply your settings and show cleanup history |
| Google access tokens | chrome.storage.session |
To call the Gmail API. Removed when you close Chrome; they expire after about one hour |
chrome.storage.local and chrome.storage.session stay on your computer. chrome.storage.sync is synchronized between your computers by Chrome Sync if you have it turned on; that synchronization is provided by Google under Google's privacy policy. SunsetMail never stores the content, sender addresses, or subjects of your emails.
Sharing and transfer
We do not sell, rent, or share Google user data with anyone. We do not transfer it to third parties, and no person reads it. Google user data is never sent to any server other than Google's.
SunsetMail's use and transfer of information received from Google APIs to any other app will adhere to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. In particular, Google user data is not:
- used for advertising, including personalized or retargeted ads;
- sold, or used to determine creditworthiness or for lending purposes;
- used to develop, improve, or train generalized artificial intelligence or machine learning models;
- read by humans, unless you give us explicit permission (for example, when you send us something while asking for support), it is needed for security purposes, or it is required by law.
Payments (SunsetMail Pro)
SunsetMail Pro is sold through Polar, which acts as the merchant of record. When you buy Pro, Polar collects your name, email address, and payment information and processes them under Polar's privacy policy. We receive order information from Polar (such as your email address and what you bought) to provide the license and support.
When you enter a license key in SunsetMail, the extension sends the license key to Polar to activate and validate it. No Gmail data is sent to Polar.
Website
Our website, sunsetmail.linetworks.net, is a static site hosted on Cloudflare Pages. Cloudflare may process technical data such as IP addresses to deliver and protect the site.
To understand how many people visit the website, we use Cloudflare Web Analytics. It collects anonymous statistics such as the pages viewed, the referring site, the browser and device type, the country, and page load performance. It does not use cookies or local storage, and does not track you across websites. See Cloudflare's privacy policy. The website does not use advertising.
This applies to the website only. The SunsetMail extension does not use analytics, and no Gmail data is ever sent to the website or to Cloudflare.
Your choices and deleting your data
- Delete a rule: deleting a rule in SunsetMail deletes the Gmail filter and SunsetMail's data for it.
- Remove SunsetMail: removing the extension from Chrome deletes the data SunsetMail stored in Chrome's extension storage.
- Revoke access: you can remove SunsetMail's access to your Google account at any time at myaccount.google.com/permissions.
- Filters and labels in Gmail: filters and labels that SunsetMail created are part of your Gmail account. They stay after you remove SunsetMail, and you can delete them in Gmail's settings.
Because we have no servers, we hold no copy of your Gmail data to delete.
Security
All communication with Google and Polar uses HTTPS. Access tokens are kept only in Chrome's session storage and are never written to disk by SunsetMail. SunsetMail asks only for the permissions it needs.
Children
SunsetMail is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from them.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we will update the effective date above. If a change affects how Google user data is used, we will notify you in the extension or on our website before the change takes effect.
